The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s annual concert at the MacAllister Center for the Performing Arts at Garfield Park was held June 22. Despite threatening skies earlier in the day, the orchestra took the stage on a warm, sunny evening. But because of impending weather the fireworks show was postponed; a new date has not been set.

Among those enjoying the concert were (from left) Dan and Ginny O’Brien and Dale and Joanna Weiler. Both couples said they love the patriotic music. The Weilers are graduates of Manual High School, and Joanna retired from the ISO’s administrative offices.

In a related story, Friends of Garfield Park and Prime 47 Indianapolis, a swanky steak and seafood house at 47 S. Pennsylvania St., are teaming July 5-9 in a fundraising effort for the park’s youth programs. The restaurant will earmark 20 percent of all sales to Friends when people mention the promotion. Reservations can be arranged by calling 624-0720.

“We are thrilled to support Garfield Park and the Friends,” said managing partner Brad Shaffer. “I have been a longtime supporter of the park and just hope we have a great showing of support in July.”

Hildebrand will serve as grand marshal

Southport will celebrate the Fourth of July from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday. The gala will get underway with a parade, which steps off at Southport Elementary School and heads down Walnut Street to Southport Road to Derbyshire Road. Pete Hilde-brand will serve as grand marshal.

Hildebrand was nominated by Dan Shine, who wrote in his recommendation: “Pete has to be one of the oldest residents in Southport. He and his family have lived here since 1949. His father, Oral, was on the Town Board in the 1960s. Pete has served on the Parks Board; he was Santa Claus; and he has volunteered for several different civic events through the years, including our car shows. He has always been loyal to Southport. As a young boy I always looked up to Pete as a protector. We can’t wait to see Pete in the front line of the parade.”

An Independence Day service will start at 11:45 a.m. at Southport Park, 6901 Derbyshire Road, and it will be followed by a party to celebrate the nation’s 240th birthday.

In addition to free hot dogs and cake and ice cream being served to the first 700 people, there will be games and dance lessons showcasing steps that were popular in Indiana in the 1800s.
