UIndy students spruce up Garfield Park

9/28/2016

As part of the University of Indianapolis’ Super Saturday of Service, teams of freshmen fanned out across the city Sept. 24 to participate in community service projects.

About 30 of the nearly 700 students spent the morning at Garfield Park, where they cleaned dirt and overgrown grass off of walking and biking trails, pulled weeds and painted the top railing on a bridge.

The students received a little guidance from members of Friends of Garfield Park.

“These kids are doing a great job,” said Friends member John Hornberger. “They already have this trail looking better. It used to be a mess every time it rained.”

“These kids are troopers,” said Friends member Cheryl Dillenback, whose group painted the top railing of a bridge. “They are covering up where people scratched their names on the railing.”

Award-winning artist Diane Burrell will exhibit her paintings and assorted enamel works Oct. 5-29 at the Southside Art League in Greenwood.

She has studied traditional cloisonne methods as well as more contemporary methods of multiple firings in a 1,400-degree table top furnace. Once exposed to the subtle changes that occur in the vibrant opaque and transparent colors, she said she was hooked.

Now Burrell experiments with jewelry, wall hangings, plates and bowls. She has won awards at the Indiana State Fair and the Madison County Artist Show and has exhibited at the Hoosier Salon.

Burrell, who teaches at several galleries, lives in her studio home on a lake in Anderson, where she is inspired by Indiana’s natural beauty and wildlife. Many themes for her work come from life’s experiences, including travels and struggles in the past with mental illness.

A reception in her honor will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at the gallery, 299 E. Broadway St. Her work can be viewed from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays. Call 882-5562 to arrange a time outside of those hours.
