Looking for a place to enjoy a classy meal? If so, Cheryl Domi can help as she owns the Sassafras Tea Room in Greenwood, which serves up a Victorian dinning experience.
“It kinda fell in my lap,” Domi said. “Been here for eight and half years. Every year is better.”
Sassafras features a variety of custom tea blends and a venue that’s able to host events from bridal and baby showers to small weddings. Seeing families bringing their daughters in their favorite princess outfits is an everyday occurrence.
“I wanted to offer a place where people can say they’ve been somewhere,” she said. “Making memories that they will remember that they did this with grandma or mom or dad. It’s a sense of community.” Since its establishment in 2010 at 229 N. Madison Ave., Domi has added a gift shop and a bakery for pastries and desserts. “We can make custom cakes,” she said.
Today, her business is fighting the construction on Madison; it’s a dilemma that many other Greenwood companies are having to deal with. “It’s challenging trying to get to us,” she said. “Let people know we are still here and try not to forget us.” Sassafras has had visitors from as far away as Florida come in for lunch.
Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Saturday; English tea time is from 2:30-4 p.m., and reservations for it can be arranged by calling 1-317-888-8449. The restaurant will open in the evenings and on Sundays for groups. Domi admits women comprise most of her customers, but men also enjoy the food, particularly the gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. The menu also features other sandwiches for around $11, quiche and scones.
“This place is geared more toward women, but once men come in they come back. They like the food.”
