The Southside was well represented when the Catholic Youth Organization presented its volunteer awards May 4 at SS. Peter & Cathedral.
St. John Bosco Awards – the highest honor that the CYO bestows – were presented to M.J. Stallings of Nativity, Dan Lutgring of Our Lady of the Greenwood and Joseph Matis of St. Barnabas.
The honorees were singled out for truly contributing to the physical, psychological and social development of youths.
The award’s namesake was a 19th-century priest who lived in Turin, Italy, and dedicated his life to the betterment and education of disadvantaged youths. Bosco established a network of organizations to carry on his work and was canonized a saint by Pope Pius XI in 1934.
Monsignor Albert Busald Awards, which recognize adults who have given sustained service to the youths through CYO and ministry programs, were given to Gerald Rieger of Nativity, John Guerrettaz, Our Lady of the Greenwood; Matt Dillon, Sacred Heart; Andrea Pawlik, SS. Francis & Clare; Amy Lezon, St. Barnabas; Kirby Schott, St. Jude; and Jeanine and Mark Currans, St. Mark.
Receiving Spirit of Youth Awards were Emry Himes, Good Shepherd; Garrett Schura, Our Lady of the Greenwood; Isaac Howe, SS. Francis & Clare; John Erickson IV and Madison Sanneman, St. Jude; Justin Hornek, Louie Hibner and Abigail Currans, St. Mark; and Charles Brehob and Nicola Wood, St. Roch.
