Their styles are as diverse as their robust personalities, but two things are certain: Special Olympians who participate in the bowling league sponsored by Marion County South Special Olympics are competitive and supportive of one another.

The league at Expo Bowling Center features 29 teams of four players, and they go at it Saturday mornings in the fall in preparation for the Marion County tournament Nov. 17.

“The league is popular with the bowlers, and it’s a great place for parents to get support,” said Kathy West, assistant county coordinator of Special Olympics. The south group is hosting a fundraiser from 4-8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at 7715 Knapp Road.

The event will feature a chili cook-off, food, games, a costume contest, silent auction, hayrides and music. Admission is $5 per child age 5 and under, $10 for everybody else. Info: 317-9199969.

Dan McGuire is known as the “pro” in the league. He averages a 190 and has rolled a 300. He often serves as a mentor to the younger bowlers.

Nathan Stone has been bowling for about 20 years and carries a 120 average. A three-year bagger at Kroger, Stone said he enjoys his job as much as he does bowling.
