A 2001 graduate, Starks participated in volleyball, basketball and track and field and won 11 varsity letters. She excelled in the high jump, winning three Marion County titles and four sectional and four regional championships. Her record leap of 5 feet, 10 inches in the 1998 county meet still stands. She won state in 1998 and was second and third in 2000 and ’01, respectively. She was considered the country’s best high jumper as a sophomore.
Starks was also a stellar athlete at Indiana State University, where she earned a degree in Spanish and was the Missouri Valley Conference indoor champion in 2003 and ’05. She was an NCAA outdoor qualifier in ’04 and was named All-State three times.
Starks, who earned her master’s degree at the University of Indianapolis, teaches Spanish at Beech Grove High and is an assistant track coach at Southport. SUBMITTED PHOTO
