Southport junior Lauren Cullison was honored Monday as the IBEW Local 481 Athlete of the Month for October. Cullison is holding the $1,000 scholarship award presented by representatives of the local union and WISH-TV Channel 8 sports.
She is seen with parents Greg and Cathee Cullison in front of the trophy case at Southport. The 5-10 outside hitter set school single-season records of 405 kills this year and a school single-game mark of 31 kills against Conference Indiana opponent Terre Haute South.
The Cardinals finished 13-15 under Southport alumni Chelsea Brothers Hoffman, whose volleyball records Cullison broke. Cullison has a 3.6 GPA and is a verbal commit to the University of Indianapolis, where she plans to major in elementary education.
Cullison attributed the recognition to her hard work and emphasized that the honor also puts the spotlight on the school’s improving volleyball program. She has an older brother, Brad, who attends Wabash College.
