Clayton Bowie launched his high school sports career as a midfielder on Southport’s 2010 soccer sectional championship team. He also made the track and field squad as a freshman and recorded one of the school’s best times in the 3,200-meter run at the Conference Indiana meet. The rest, as they say, is history.
Last year as a junior he captured sectional and regional titles before bringing home Southport’s first individual state track championship since 2006 by winning the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 1.36 seconds, almost five seconds ahead of the runner-up.

Bowie, who will take an impressive resume with him to Ohio State University, rewrote Southport’s track and field history Saturday by dominating the 3,200 again in the state finals at Indiana University Bloomington. His time of 9:06.63 was slower than 2013, but his margin of victory over Carmel’s Ben Veach was 6.39 seconds.
Center Grove senior Justin Veteto, sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 2013, improved his time from last year by 1.39 seconds to win the state title in 36.85, 1.06 seconds ahead of Timothy Deal of Penn.

Veteto, who was second in the 110 hurdles (14.16) for the second consecutive year, also ran anchor on the fourth-place 1,600 relay. The Trojans (3:18.95) were less than a half- second behind champion Brownsburg. Center Grove’s team featured Zak Smith, Jackson Hohlt, Evan Tandy and Veteto.

The Trojans finished third with 29 points as Gary West captured the championship.
CG’s Grant Stapleton earned a podium finish (top nine) in the 800 run with a time of 1:55.35, good for ninth place. Teammate Cameron Tidd was sixth in discus with a throw of 160 feet, 10 inches.
Franklin Central’s 3,200 relay team finished fifth (7:51.23) with Kyle O’Malley, Andrew Schmalfeldt, Evan Shuck and Robbie Talhelm. The 400 relay was 11th (42.83 seconds). Schmalfeldt was fourth in the 800 in 1:54.35.
Roncalli discus thrower Connor James finished fourth (161-9).

Greenwood’s David Dalton closed his high school career by finishing 10th in the 3,200 (9:17.40).
Girls state meet

Fourth-place finishes by two individuals and one relay team highlighted Southside performances Friday in the track and field championships, also at IU.

Perry Meridian senior Kieran Casey finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run (4:59.44), capping a comeback year after being plagued with illness last season.

Center Grove’s Taylor Pennington placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5-4; she was second last year.
The Trojans’ 1,600 relay team of Aliyah Clinker, Victoria Long, Olivia Rassel and Lauren Rau was fourth (4:01.71), less than 2 seconds behind Fort Wayne Northrop’s winning effort.

Franklin Central’s 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams finished in the top nine.
The Flashes’ 2-mile relay team of Cailyn Adams, Brooke Talhelm, Olivia Koehl and Haley Welch was seventh (9:22.21), and the 1,600 relay was ninth with Catherine Mattiga, Dezha Moore, Jenna Thomas and Ahmanah Woods (4:01.71).

Individual podium finishes were turned in by Talhelm, seventh, 800, 2:6.13; Allie Dalton, Greenwood, seventh, 3,200, 10:49.55; and Melissa Nelson, Center Grove, ninth, pole vault, 11-6.
Lawrence Central won the title.

The two-day attendance for both meets was announced at 9,846.
