Southport High School Anchor yearbook advisor Sam Hanley is the latest educator to be honored by the Indiana High School Press Association (IHSPA).

Hanley is the recipient of the Ella Sengenberger Indiana Student Media Advisor of the Year award. He received the honor at the IHSPA’s state convention recently at Franklin College.

One year ago, SHS principal Brian Knight was honored as the IHSPA Indiana Administrator of the Year for his ongoing support of student publications produced by students at the high school.

Hanley has served as advisor for The Anchor for over 15 years. He teaches English at the high school where he is co-chair of the English department. He has taught there since 2002.

“I’m honored and blessed,” Hanley said upon receiving the award.

He later added, His colleagues and students contend the award is well-deserved.

Co-editors-in-chief of The Anchor, Olivia Graphman and Rin Diki, The Journal newspaper advisor Mike Klopfenstein and Knight submitted letters of recommendation for the coveted IHSPA award.

“The bottom line is he’s deserving,” Klopfenstein said in The Journal. “He’s been a fantastic advisor for such a long time and … this is a guy who helps out kids not just out of school, but all over the state, hopefully all over the country.”

His students described Hanley as “helpful,” knowledgeable,” and “approachable.”

The recommendations cited Hanley’s ability to guide, teach and support his students as they work together to produce their final yearbook product.

Hanley also serves as vice president of the IHSPA executive board which meant that he couldn’t be informed of his recognition prior to the award ceremony because he was part of planning the annual convention at Franklin College.
