Shriners, recognized by their bright red fezzes, will be at area White Castles to give customers the opportunity to make a donation to their hospitals in Chicago, Cincinnati and Lexington, Ky., in exchange for a voucher for three free hamburgers.
Potentate Tim Murphy stresses the importance of supporting Shriners Hospitals, saying, “Many people, when asked what the Shriners do, talk about our parade units. What they may not know is that that man in the fez driving the miniature car or marching in a band plays a large role in supporting the well-being of children who need medical care throughout the world.”
Participating restaurants include the ones at 3229 S. East St., 4520 S. Emerson Ave., 105 Sheek Road, Greenwood, 1414 W. Thompson Road and 2165 Shelby St.
The hospitals specialize in providing care for orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip and palate.
Shriners International, a fraternity based on the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth, founded the network of hospitals as its official philanthropy in 1922. What began as one hospital is now a world-renowned health-care system with 22 facilities in three countries.
