Roncalli senior Claire Whalen has been named the school’s valedictorian, and classmate Michael Otley has earned the honor of being salutatorian.

Whalen completed a rigorous coursework that included 10 Advance Placement courses. She is a National Merit Commended Scholar, earned perfect scores on the ACT English and reading sections, is an AP Scholar with Honor and earned the highest score of 5 on three AP exams.

Her extracurricular activities include cross country, track and field and basketball, through which she was named a co-captain, Academic All-State and Most Valuable Player. She is among the top five female high jumpers in school history.

She has contributed to the community through volunteer work at a homeless family shelter, food distribution centers, a home for the elderly and the Center for Global Impact.

Whalen, who attended Center Grove Middle School Central, is considering her college options and plans to major in psychology.  She and her parents, Rob and Liz Whalen, are parishioners of SS. Francis & Clare Catholic Church.

Otley will have completed eight AP courses and an additional 19 credits in other accelerated and honors courses by the time he graduates. He has earned perfect scores on the ACT in reading, math and English and the composite score. He is a National Merit Commended Student and was one of only 26 seniors in Indiana named to the Indianapolis Colts’ Indiana High School Academic All-Star football team.

A member of Roncalli’s 2016 undefeated state championship football team, Otley was a three-year letterman. He is also on the track and field squad and was a member of the 4-by-200-meter relay team that holds the school record.

Otley has completed nearly 200 hours of community service through the I Can Bike Foundation, The Lord’s Pantry at Anna’ House, St. Vincent de Paul and the Concerns of Police Survivors Organization.

He attended St. Barnabas Grade School and plans to study engineering at Purdue. He and his parents, Jim and Sophia Otley, are parishioners of St. Roch Church.
