Alice Hughes Glover, the Emmerich Manual High School 2023 Alumnus of the Year, reassured alumni that the historic Manual name will continue during the annual alumni luncheon Friday at the Primo Banquet and Convention Center.

The historic high school is operating as a combined Christel House charter school and Indianapolis Public Schools innovative school after struggling for several years to continue educating students on the Southside before falling under a state mandate.

Glover emphasized that the Manual name will not be lost.

“We, though, are not going away,” Glover said in remarks to alumni before receiving her award for her service on the alumni board and helping to preserve and store many school artifacts with the cooperation of Christel House and IPS personnel. She also helped in establishing a new alumni room at the high school.
Manual alumni will continue to be invested in the history and future of the school that was founded in 1895 on the near-Southside and was relocated to its current site at 2405 S. Madison Ave., in 1953.

She provided an update on the school, emphasizing that the school is now full.

She emphasized that the Manual name would always be attached to the school because of its 100-plus year Junior ROTC program that is a historic agreement between Manual High School and the ROTC.

The alumni organization is arguably the largest in Indiana and has supported the school for decades.
Hundreds of alumni attended the luncheon Friday with seating at tables marked by the decade in which attendees graduated from Manual. Also, selected Christel House at Manual administrators and teachers were in attendance.

Of significance, alumni honored 11 high school seniors with scholarships (name, college major, and college to attend): Javon Tyler, sports management, Indiana State University (ISU); Anna Ramsey, psychology, University of Indianapolis (UIndy); Terrance Hill, sports management, ISU; Gracie Archer, psychology, ISU; John Robinson, engineering, Purdue University; Miriam Chavez, education, IUB; Susan Edenfield, digital design, ISU; Zion Hudson, theater, business, Howard University; Man Ciang, business, IUB; Deshon Hollis, archeology, St. Joseph’s; and Jada Parker, law or medicine, UIndy.

Alumni stood and enthusiastically sang the Manual High School song. Alumni who served as military veterans also were recognized. Each attending member of the Class of 1973 also introduced themselves at the podium as members of the 50-year class. Available 50-year apparel was a hot item for alumni to purchase.

Warren Sherman, Class of 1943, was acknowledged as the oldest alumni in attendance.

Alumni gathered for a long time reminiscing even after the luncheon ended.

The next major alumni gathering will be the “Manual Day” picnic Aug. 24 at German Park, 8600 S. Meridian Street.

Alice Hughes Glover
(Class of 1961)

Born in 1943, Alice has been a lifelong resident of the Garfield Park South neighborhood. She first attended EMHS in 1956 when her eighth-grade class was relocated to the third floor due to IPS School No. 72 being overcrowded. In the following four years, Alice was a homeroom representative, Pep Club officer, Redskin Revue, ROTC sponsor, and League of Honor.

After high school, Alice attended Indiana Central College (now University of Indianapolis) for two years and worked at W.H. Block Co. as assistant manager in the jewelry department. After that, she managed a gift shop at Southern Plaza Shopping Center, where she later became advertising director and on-location manager.

Alice first became a member of the Manual Alumni Board in 1976 and stayed until 1986 when she accepted a sales job with AT&T Yellow pages that required travel. She retired in 2006 and returned to the alumni board as a member and later was appointed board president.

Over the years, Alice has often mentioned how fortunate she is to work with such exceptional board members whose aggregate contributions serve to make the alumni board so successful.

Additionally, she was flattered to read the following email request written by board treasurer Willis Overton which he sent to a fellow board member: “I can’t be there today but would you do me a favor and nominate Alice for Alumnus of the Year. She has gone above and beyond with the creation of a ‘new’ Alumni Room, working with both the Christel House people and the Florida group, as well as moving items to both the Broad Ripple IPS ‘holding area’ and both the Indiana Basketball and Track halls of fame.”

In conclusion, being a lifelong resident of the Garfield Park area, Alice and her husband Roger’s lives have been blessed by hard work; compassion and kindness to others; the adventures of international travel, before and after retirement; quality time spent with family and grandchildren; enjoyable fellowship with old friends and neighbors; and the opportunity to support her Alma Mater through many years of service on the Manual Alumni Board.
