A senior couple at Rosegate proved it’s never too late for love by exchanging wedding vows Dec. 4.

Mary Ann Matthewson and Ronald Tanner, both 73, were married at Rosegate, one of several communities operated by American Senior Communities, after being engaged three years ago.

Some area businesses agreed to pitch in to make the occasion memorable. The Kroger at Thompson Road and Emerson Avenue provided flowers and cupcakes. Rosegate’s therapy manager baked the cake.

The bride and groom are lifelong Southsiders, having met at Edgewood Grade School. They graduated from Southport High School in 1960 and were reacquainted at their 50-year reunion.

Steve Grahm served as the best man; the bride’s sister, Barbara McGillem, was the maid of honor. The chaplain was Mike Cutless, a former member of the Perry Township Fire Department.

Tanner’s goal was to walk down the aisle, and he achieved that by going  through intensive therapy.

Matthewson has three children, Trina Fair and Gerald and John Matthewson, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Tanner, a retired Perry Township firefighter, has two sons, Dale and Bill Tanner, and five grandchildren.
