When landscapers talk about mulch, the first name that comes to mind is Indiana Mulch & Stone, which is known for an array of natural and dyed mulches and stones in many colors, shapes and sizes.
Those quality products are why the company has established itself as a mainstay for landscapers since 1987.
“Our personalized customer service, innovative products and attention to detail has customers coming back year after year,” said owner Mark Strominger, who also carries gravel, pavers, topsoil, railroad ties, fountains, grass seed, straw, lawn edging, weed barrier and other landscaping supplies.
Stone and pavers are becoming more popular in landscape projects. People who have lived in their homes for 15 or 20 years and don’t want to move will add patios and rock gardens for an added dimension. “We can get rocks as big as customers want ... the problem is moving them at their homes,” he said.
Located at 1451 S. West. St. (762-5087), the business is clearly visible from the street because of its small “mountains” of mulch and stone. Strominger will sell about 60,000 yards of mulch this year, most of which was purchased by customers in the spring.
And while some people will try to tell you that “mulch is mulch,” that’s not the case.
Indiana Mulch & Stone has mastered green production techniques and is proud to lead the industry when it comes to environmentally friendly practices, said Strominger. “More than 95 percent of our mulches are made with recycled products.”
Some of the more popular mulches are:
• Premium hardwood: the rich color of processed hardwood bark is from sawmills in southern Indiana. The aged mulch has been stock-piled through the winter and turned regularly for even composting.
• Hardwood fine: derived from premium hardwood mulch, it’s extra fine and dark.
• Cypress: made from 100 percent pure red cypress from the swamps of Florida.
• All-bark cypress: highest quality of cypress available – no wood added, just the bark.
• Dyed mulch – brown and black: uniquely attractive product that is safe for humans, animals and the environment. The dyed varieties account for 60 percent of Strominger’s sales.
• Rubber: for superior appearance and color contrast that will last for years. Made from recycled tires. Excellent for play areas.
• Playsoft: wood fiber mulch specifically designed for playgrounds, dog runs and running paths. Long lasting, clean, environmentally safe and economical.
And if you don’t have a truck to haul your mulch, topsoil or stones, there’s no need to fret as delivery service is available – albeit a little primitive 28 years ago.
“We started out making deliveries in a rented box truck and unloading it with pitchforks,” said Strominger. “Today we have a fleet of our own dump trucks with experienced drivers.

Indiana Mulch prides itself on setting the bar with its delivery service. Next-day delivery is the norm, with same-day service available in some cases. “Whether you want a single boulder for your home or hundreds of yards of mulch for your properties, we have you covered,” he said.
For people and companies that have brush and stumps to get rid of, they can be dropped off at 10200 Pendleton Pike. Bulk leaves, grasses and root balls with dirt are not accepted.
