As part of its Patriots’ Day celebration and 9/11 remembrance on Sunday, Good Shepherd Catholic Church blessed its first flag pole.

The brainchild was that of Patrick Shilson (fastening flag to the rope), who coordinated the undertaking for his Eagle Scout project. Shilson, a junior at Roncalli, was assisted in the endeavor by fellow members of Boy Scout Troop 51.

The pole stands 35 feet tall, and the cost of it and the flag was $1,900. Funds came from the sale of memorial bricks at the pole’s base and a donation in the name of the late Glenn Robbins.

Chris’ Eagle Scout project (below) consisted of building a grotto at Good Shepherd in honor of Mother Theodore Guerin, founder of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in Indiana. A third brother, Ben, is also an Eagle Scout and attends Purdue.

A butterfly garden also adorns the grounds. The garden features a plaque that lists the names of area and distant children who died at a young age. The church will celebrate its 20th anniversary at the 10 a.m. Mass Nov. 20. A luncheon will follow; reservations should be called to 783-3158.

It's interesting to know that a pole of about 35 feet tall with the flag costs about $1,900. I hope that aluminum school flagpoles would be more affordable as well but still be durable. It would ensure that the school will have the funds to get one erected on their property to honor our country.
