More than 1,400 flags were burned during Southport’s 14th annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day, June 14.
In previous years, worn and tattered flags were burned in barrels, but with the record amount of flags retired this year, they were burned in a bonfire as audience members paid tribute to the armed forces and their country.
Duane Langreck, Boy Scouts Troop 120, Greenwood chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Rev. Stephen Gossage, Perry Township Service Unit Girl Scouts, Nicole Bridgens (singing patriotic favorites), Jack Bussell (performing taps) and Kevin Rankel helped to make the program a success.
Honored veterans/ servicemen were Steve Schultz (Army), Bill Kingsley (Marine Corps), Joe Allman (Coast Guard), Jim Francis (Navy) and Tim Woods (Air Force).

Kevin Rankel prepares to retire his son’s honor flag. His son, the late Sgt. John K. Rankel, made the ultimate sacrifice June 7, 2010, during his third tour of duty in Afghanistan.
