Blake Bowell has been battling a rare form of gliosarcoma brain cancer for nearly four years.
Now four surgeries and numerous treatment cycles later, the 25-year-old son of Mark Bowell and LeDania Carmichael is undergoing his second phase of proton therapy radiation treatments at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Blake a disabled veteran, was an All-State runner at Franklin Central High School and was appointed to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
“Through Blake’s journey we have been blessed to see many miracle moments and have created a cause – BlakeStrong – to share them,” Mark Bowell said. “Since 2014 we have raised thousands of dollars to support brain cancer survivors and their families. This is not a fund for Blake or my family, but a platform to share hope and provide assistance.
“That said, on Friday, May 19, at 6:30 p.m. we are hosting BlakeStrong Fest at the Garfield Park Sunken Gardens, 2450 Shelby St. We have decided to raise funds to support the Children’s Garden at the park and Alex Hayden, who is also battling brain cancer.”
Also sponsored by the Friends of Garfield Park, the evening will feature the musical entertainment of Free, But Not Cheap, Barbender and Frank Bradford & Sons. A $10 donation will be asked for admission.
Bowell, who can be reached at 317-840-8111 for more information, is hoping for a large crowd. “Bring your blankets, lawns chairs and a bucket of chicken or a picnic basket full of food and enjoy a great evening of music.”
