SOUTHSIDER VOICE PHOTO BY BOB KELLY A dinner program to celebrate the distinguished career of former Roncalli football coach Bruce Scifres (center) was held May 31 at Primo Banquet & Conference Center. The evening featured several guest speakers, including Bill Kuntz, who was responsible for bringing Scrifres to Roncalli as an assistant coach in 1980. Scifres, whose shoes will be filled by Scott Marsh, returned to the school as head coach in 1990 and led the Rebels to seven state championships, the most recent being his undefeated team of 2016. His record was 248-88. Scifres, who has been named executive director of the Catholic Youth Organization of Indianapolis, reflected on the 10 things he’ll miss most about coaching and the five most memorable events of his career. “I hope I impacted all of my players’ lives in a positive manner,” he said. “I’ll miss the players and the coaches, but I’m excited about my new opportunity.” His former assistants include (kneeling, from left) Dean Stahley, Scott Houser, Chris Belch, Don Byrne, Ray Shelburn, Dan Lauck, Mike Harris; (second row) Bob Tully, Justin Hornek, Ed Keller; (back) Kuntz, Brian Lauck, Marsh, Aaron Strader, Dave Burton, Jason Werner, Mike O’Mara, Tim Puntarelli, Scifres, Phil Gatts, Chris Strykowski, Mike Sahm, Luke Scifres, Greg Armbruster and Sam Otley.
