Bill Bane is Beech Grove High School’s Teacher of the Year.

Born May 29, 1937, to Paul and Mary Bane, Bane attended Bellevue Elementary and Trinity High School, where he was a four-year member of the wrestling team and a three-time state champion, winning the title his freshman and sophomore years as an 88-pounder and his junior year in the 95-pound class.

One of four brothers, two of whom died at an early age, Bane was an Eagle Scout in Troop 1.

Bane received a wrestling scholarship to Indiana University and placed third in the Big Ten tournament three times before earning his bachelor’s degree 1959. He was presented the IU Balfour Award for Wrestling and tried out for the Olympics in 1955. He also received his master’s from IU.

Once Bane quit competing, he took up coaching at Monroeville High School in Pennsylvania and later at Southport and Beech Grove high schools.

Bane, known for his wonderful personality, began his coaching career at Southport High, where he taught physical education and coached wrestling and football from 1959-67.

His teaching and coaching career – wrestling (head coach) and football – at Beech Grove started in 1967. His grapplers won several sectional, regional and conference championships and just missed winning the 1972 state title by a half-point.

Bane was inducted into the Indiana and Pennsylvania wrestling hall of fames in 1987 and 1996, respectively.
After retiring from coaching, he was named assistant athletic director and later athletic director and dean of students until retiring in 1998.

He has since worked part time in grounds, maintenance and transportation until taking on the responsibility of delivering the interschool mail.

Bane and his wife, Becky, have two children, Bill Bane III and Tracy Goodman.

Bill is employed by Eli Lilly and Co. and lives in Colorado with wife Kelly and their children, Madeline, Brandt and Brian, who is stationed in the Middle East with the Air Force.

Tracy, who teaches at Southport Sixth Grade Academy, and her husband, Mike, have two children, Hannah and Samuel.
