The Rev. James Wilmoth has been a Catholic priest for 52 years, and there’s no hesitation in his voice when asked about the most enjoyable aspects of his profession.
“It’s celebrating Mass and performing weddings, baptisms and other sacraments. It’s about working with people,” said Wilmoth, who was ordained a priest in 1965 and has served as pastor of St. Roch Parish since 1997. He can always be found at games and other extracurricular activities.
He has also served as pastor of Holy Name Church and St. Michael the Archangel and as chaplain of Roncalli, the Indianapolis Fire Department and the Marion County Sherriff’s Department.
The stories of his humanity are legendary, and that list of deeds continues to grow. Many parishioners say he is best known for his faith, humor and humility and being joyous.
Wilmoth said he has no intention of retiring as long as he enjoys good health. “I’ll do this as long as the Lord wants me to ... and I guess the bishop will have something to say about it too.”
