Today is the first day of school. By the time you read this our children will have been picked up by their buses and greeted by their teachers for their first day of the 2016-17 school year.
I would like to welcome everyone back for the start of what is anticipated to be one of the greatest school years in Perry Township. We are prepared to open our doors to almost 16,000 students, a record for us. Our nearly 1,900 employees will meet the educational needs of the 10th largest school corporation in Indiana.
Yes, we are growing in enrollment, and we are in the process of constructing safe, secure, permanent classrooms. Among the additions are four kindergarten centers that will house 1,200 pupils. This will open up 60 classrooms around the district for additional students.
Winchester Village Elementary is being transformed from an open-concept, no-wall school to a building with classrooms that have walls and doors for added security.
These projects in conjunction with the addition of some classrooms will provide us with the space we need to move our students out of modular classroom trailers once and for all. This could not have been possible without the financial support from the Perry Township community.
Corporate sponsors also play a key role in outdoor facility improvements. The Education Foundation supported the remodel of Holder Field, and Ray Skillman Auto Group provided the financial backing to construct a new football field at Perry Meridian High.
Public schools with high academic achievement, a dedicated staff and students who take their classes seriously is a recipe for success.
Perry Township continues to be an A-rated school district and has established a culture of high expectations for student achievement. We thank you in advance for all you will do as a community to help us throughout the coming year. For now, let’s get started on another exciting school year.
