By Dr. Thomas Little
Superintendent of Perry Township Schools

I continue to be amazed that in a period of three hours we conduct two graduations in one evening and shake the hands of 1,213 graduates from Perry Meridian and Southport high schools. We congratulate all of our graduates and their parents on this wonderful accomplishment and milestone.

During the summer we will be busy cleaning our buildings while renovating a number of them. Four new kindergarten centers will begin to take shape, and progress at Winchester Village Elementary will continue.

You will also notice a lot of changes to the outdoor athletic facilities at Perry Meridian, which will have a new football facility in the fall of 2017. The kindergarten centers and Winchester Village will also be completed by then.

This will mark a new chapter in the history of Perry Township. Updates on all of the projects can be found at www.perryschools.org. We also have a new section on the website for all of our accomplishments as a district.

The majority of our students will not stray far from their schools over the summer, especially our athletes, who will spend a large portion of their time at our sports facilities. They do this not to just provide a game for us to watch but to better themselves and to build characters that will help sustain them throughout their lives.

Elementary summer school will be held at Lincoln and Mary Bryan. Jumpstart, for students entering kindergarten, will take place at Clinton Young, Homecroft, Southport and Lincoln. Nearly 1,200 elementary students will be involved in some form of summer school.

Our high schools and middle schools will accommodate more than 1,100 students over the summer either online or in class.

Thank you for taking time to read our columns. We are proud of our students and our staff. The opportunity to write a weekly column and share all the awards and the progress that we experience is valued. We plan to resume bringing the good news to you again when school starts again.

The continued gains in achievement and the state and national recognition of our schools and our staff members is impressive; however, let us never forget that without the support of our community we would have not been able to continue our strong rankings. The residents of Perry Township care about their youths and understand that a successful public school system is aligned with a strong, growing and progressive community.

We want you to have a summer filled with time for family, making new friends and reading several good books. Perhaps this is a summer you start a new hobby or learn how to play a musical instrument or another language.
Make this the summer that you complete one of those activities that you just don’t have the time to begin.

In closing, we can’t wait for school to begin again and to have our halls filled with the voices of children. See you all in seven weeks!
