It is time to celebrate. Our children returned to school Tuesday!
There is something magical about the first day of school that sets the tone for the entire year. The excitement of reuniting with past friends and making new ones is truly a joy to observe.
Four years ago we started something that has grown into a true celebration of the first day of staff returning to their assignments. Every staff member is invited to an opening day celebration at Southport Fieldhouse. Marching bands and flag corps from both high schools open the program with their fight songs, and the school board, administration and the teachers association deliver remarks.
Various staff members were honored during the ceremony. They were nominated by their peers.
• Support Staff of the Year: Transportation Secretary/Treasurer of the Year: Karen Butchko-Cleary.
Food Service Worker of the Year: Diana Dinkins, Perry Meridian Middle.
Support Staff of the Year: Heather Long, Douglas MacArthur Elementary.
Bus Driver of the Year: Sherri Worley.
Custodian of the Year: Sarah Anderson, Southport Sixth Grade Academy.
Substitute Teacher of the Year: Roxanna Stroud, Glenns Valley Elementary.
Teachers of the Year:
Jill Fosler, Lincoln Elementary.
Ruth Turner, Clinton Young Elementary.
Deborah Bolen, MacArthur Elementary.
Krista Day, Glenns Valley Elementary.
Susan Keller, Burkhart Elementary.
Melissa Summitt, Home-croft Elementary.
Amie Waggoner - Jeremiah Gray-Edison Elementary.
Brad Davis, Rosa Parks-Edison Elementary.
Angie Kendall, Southport Elementary.
Jonna Stout, Winchester Village.
Beverly Trimbur, Perry Meridian Sixth Grade Academy.

Administrator of the Year: Robert Bohannon, assistant superintendent for career preparation.
Last year was an outstanding year in our schools. Enrollment continues to grow; achievement test scores continue to improve; and corporate partnerships continue to flourish. We are fortunate to be extended the opportunity to work, live and be a part of Perry Township.
One of the biggest challenges will be meeting our increased enrollment.
We have 28 portable classrooms and understand that they are temporary housing initiatives. The question our community must address is: “How should your school system meet the needs of classroom space?”
Options will be forthcoming in the near future. We will want to hear your thoughts.
