I’ve been working on my September calendar and it looks like I’m in for a fairly busy month. Just this week, I have a breakfast with a group of my high school classmates. We are the Southport High School Class of 1960. This should be a very special breakfast because I’m hoping that several folks might show up for the very first time. We will be at the Hotcakes Emporium at 9 a.m. today (Wednesday).
Simon and I enjoy attending the monthly Southsider Voice Car Nutz cruise-in at Beck Service Center, 6025 Madison Ave., located at the southeast corner of Madison and Edgewood avenues. It is held on the first Friday of the month during warm weather. That also will be our first day of the Labor Day Weekend. I remember when schools started directly after Labor Day.
On Saturday of this holiday weekend, I will have a special lunch with our adopted (unofficially adopted) granddaughter. She will be moving to the westside in a few weeks to be closer to her work. We are going to try to keep our weekly breakfast going.
A couple of weeks ago, my column featured Crankshaft, the comic strip. He was explaining to his friends that he has a different doctor for each part of his body. Next Tuesday and Wednesday, I have doctor appointments with two different doctors. These are both just routine checkups. Crankshaft and I seem to have a lot in common.
After the doctor appointment on Wednesday, I will have to scamper to our monthly class lunch. This lunch gathering meets in a different location each month. I have not been officially notified of this month location as yet. I hope that it is fairly close to Bluff Road and Southport Road. That is where I’ll be for my doctor appointment.
My father’s birthday was on September 7th. We gave our previous dog, Stuart, that same birthday date. We always enjoyed celebrating with both of them. Now both Simon the dog and Harry the cat has claimed September 7th for themselves. We will be celebrating with both of them.
I’ll be back at Bluff and Southport Road to have my Saturday lunch with “Little T”, granddaughter at the Hotcakes Emporium. It might be a quick lunch because we will be helping her with her move to the west side.
I also attend a monthly breakfast that involves some retired Perry Township school bus drivers. It is held on the second Monday of the month, and it is also at the Hotcakes Emporium. We have lots of fun at these get togethers. Lots of stories and memories. Retired Perry Township school bus drivers are always welcome.
I’m also a member of The Beech Grove Historical Society. It meets on the second Wednesday of the month. The pandemic really messed up lots of the meetings. I haven’t been to a meeting for a good while. I’m going to change that next month.
I also attend a monthly breakfast attended by retired employees of The Free Enterprise Charter Bus Company. I worked with them on a part time basis for several years. We enjoyed many of those trips. I also drove and worked with a few NBA teams while they were in Indianapolis to compete against the Indiana Pacers. We also get together at the Hotcakes Emporium on the third Friday of each month.
My high school class will be having a three-day reunion on the 15th, 16th and 17th of September. We are having a reunion each year now. I’m so looking forward to it. If any of my classmates are reading this and haven’t sent in your stuff, call Judy. (Everyone in our class knows Judy). I’d love to see several folks that haven’t come for a while.
On September 26th, The Perry Township / Southport Historical Society will have it’s semi-monthly meeting and a presentation will be made by Jessica Hembold about Garfield Park. Everyone is welcome.
On the last Wednesday of the month, I will again meet my classmates at the Hotcakes Emporium for another breakfast.
It’s going to be a busy month.
