The proposed IcePlex in Greenwood has found a home on land that will open up the southeast corner of County Line Road and I-65 for long-awaited development.
Indy Fuel owners Jim and Sean Hallett will develop Greenwood Sportsplex, a 175,000-square foot, $40 million sports complex to include two ice rinks, five basketball/volleyball courts and a training facility with additional amenities. The complex is being promoted as one of the largest ice rink facilities in the Midwest.
The facility will be developed in conjunction with Gersham Properties with a proposed multipurpose entertainment/retail complex on the 100-acre site, called Greenwood Town Center.
The Halletts had proposed a 115,000-square-foot IcePlex on six acres in Freedom Park on the city’s Westside, but that met opposition from neighbors.
Mayor Mark Myers and the city’s Redevelopment Commission sought a different, perhaps more visible site, for the IcePlex with the Halletts. The commission and the city will provide tax incentives for the development.
Undeveloped for several years, the site was proposed for Cabela’s and later GoodSports, but financing fell through.
