Doug Shinkle has received Perry Township Schools’ Jim and Vivian Leach Volunteer of the Year Award for his services at Homecroft Elementary.
For the past four years Shinkle has coordinated his efforts between the school and members of his church – Southport United Methodist – to build strong community ties. He works with pupils in all grade levels and is often seen dining with children while making much needed connections with those who need a positive role model in their lives. Shinkle’s peers note that his support not only comes in the form of volunteerism but also financially. Under his leadership many students and families in need of items like shirts, pants, socks, shoes and groceries have been helped. Board of education members said they believe that without the support of Shinkle and church volunteers, Homecroft Elementary would not have attained an A rating. “Doug Shinkle has worked tirelessly with Homecroft to provide tutors before and after school,” the board noted. “He works with students in small groups to either help reinforce areas of need or to help accelerate learning. Doug is leading an effort to help us make yet another huge impact of Homecroft families and Perry Township Schools.” |
