| By B. Scott Mohr Associate editor As a culmination of their studies about Indiana, first-graders at Bunker Hill Elementary in Franklin Township will stage their special version of the Indianapolis 500 on Friday. The children are building “race cars” out of cardboard and will compete in qualifying heats to determine the starting grid. Prior to the green flag waving at 2:15 p.m., “Back Home Again in Indiana” will be performed, and there will be a balloon release before the little ones “strap” themselves in their Flintstones-like cars for what’s sure to be an entertaining race. Last year’s 29th annual event was attended by an estimated 1,000 people, including Indiana first lady Karen Pence, 500 Festival princesses and 2009 Miss America, Katie Stam. Over the years the event has attracted several IndyCar drivers, politicians and basketball players from Butler and Indiana universities. It’s estimated that more than 3,000 children have taken part in the race. Proceeds have benefited the Susan B. Komen Foundation and the Indiana Canine Assistant Network. Guests are welcome and are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs. The school is located at 6620 Shelbyville Road. |

Kayla Sullivan, who graduated from the University of Indianapolis on May 2, has been named Student Journalist of the Year by the Indiana Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Sullivan, a communication major, was active in UIndy’s student news operations throughout her time on campus, serving this year as news director for UIndy TV. She began work earlier this week as a reporter for WLFI-TV in Lafayette. She is a graduate of Franklin Central High School and the daughter of Patrick and Patricia Sullivan. Faculty member Scott Uecker, a veteran broadcaster who serves as general manager of UIndy TV and WICR-FM, calls her “a leader in our program as well as a valuable and respected peer to her classmates. Kayla gives me great hope for the future of journalism. She understands that journalism is about telling stories well, keeping public officials accountable, and practicing the craft in a professional and ethical manner.” Sullivan’s work this past year included co-anchoring live coverage of the November election for WICR, with five-minute updates every 30 minutes. She has served internships at Fox 59, WISH-TV 8 and WTHR-TV 13. |
