Perry Meridian’s boys soccer team dethroned last year’s 2A state champion Center Grove from the playoffs Saturday at Fortville.
Senior Noah Nash scored Perry Meridian’s only goal early in the second period off a corner kick and lifted the Falcons to their second regional championship. The Falcons (11-3-1) shut out Greenfield 1-0, and No. 13-ranked Center Grove (12-4-3) downed Franklin Central 3-1 to reach the title duel.
The Falcons face No. 4 North Central at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Jeffersonville Semistate with the winner meeting the Columbus North-No. 9 Evansville Memorial winner at 7 p.m.
Franklin Central’s girls soccer team won a dramatic 2-1 double overtime Oct. 12 against Center Grove to reach the Shelbyville Regional championship game. Rylie Simmons scored the Flashes’ first goal in the first extra stanza, and Savannah Kellum broke a 1-1 deadlock with the winning goal in the second overtime.
In the title game Saturday, Shelby Cleek scored the Flashes’ lone goal on a long kick in the second period to defeat Greenfield 1-0. The Cougars ended Roncalli’s season 2-1 Oct. 12.
The Flashes (12-4-2) meet Terre Haute South at 9 a.m. (central time) in the second game at Evansville Central with the winner playing the No. 20 Columbus North-No. 4 Brebeuf winner at 6 p.m.
Semistate champions will vie for state titles Oct. 29 at IUPUI’s Carroll Stadium.
