Roncalli opens defense of its miraculous 4A state baseball championship Saturday at 5 p.m. against Perry Meridian in Sectional 11.
The host Rebels (14-8-1) defeated the Falcons 3-0 (14-11) behind Nick Schnell’s no-hitter earlier this season in the semifinals of the Marion County tourney. Schnell struck out 11 and drove in a run. Tommy Hansen, who holds the national record for three consecutive grand slams in one game, hit a solo home run.
The 10 Southside high schools are playing at five different sectional sites:
4A at Franklin – Wednesday: 5:30 p.m., Center Grove vs. Whiteland; 7:30 p.m., Franklin vs. Franklin Central. Monday: 11 a.m., winners G1 vs. G2; 2 p.m., Martinsville vs. Greenwood; 6 p.m., championship.
4A at Roncalli – Wednesday: 5:15 p.m., Decatur Central vs. Ben Davis; 7:30 p.m., Pike vs. Southport. Saturday: 2 p.m., winners G1 vs. G2; 5 p.m., Perry Meridian vs. Roncalli. Monday: 3 p.m., winners G1 vs. G2.
3A at Danville – Wednesday: 5:30 p.m., Indian Creek vs. Greencastle; 7:30 p.m., Washington vs. Danville. Monday: 10 a.m., winners G1 vs. G2; 12 noon, Northwest vs. Beech Grove; 7 p.m., championship.
3A at Chatard: Wednesday: 5 p.m., Manual vs. Chatard. Friday: 10 a.m., Brebeuf vs. Herron; 12:30 p.m., New Palestine vs. winner G4. Monday: 11 a.m., championship.
1A at Morristown: Wednesday: 5:30 p.m., Southwestern vs. Waldron; 7:30 p.m., Arlington v. Greenwood Christian. Friday: 10 a.m., winners G1 vs. G2; 12 noon, Morristown vs. Edinburgh. Monday; 10 a.m., championship.
