Five Southport seniors make up most of the team’s pitching staff: outfielder Keaton Moore, third baseman Joey Lemons, second baseman Dustin Church, shortstop Quintin Mosley and center fielder Chris Cox.
SOUTHPORT (3-19): Cardinals eager for new season … hit under .200 as a team last year with only three wins … coach Scott Whitlock in 18th season … defense promises to be solid again … returnees are seniors Dustin Church at second, Joey Lemons at third and Quinton Mosley at shortstop … Cards have returning pitchers in sophs Avery Short and Jack Vanover and senior Quinton Mosley… junior catcher Scott Rippy is back off knee surgery; soph Nick Lynn behind plate as freshman … lost center fielder Matt Johnston to football knee injury … Chris Cox only returning outfielder with five Cards battling for two other spots … pitching depth, six to seven deep, determined by junior varsity pitchers moving up … Mount Vernon visits Cardinals at Holder Field Tuesday … at Austin April 7 and at Lanesville April 8 for a southern trip.

Coach’s comments: “Last year our record wasn’t as strong, but we were in every game. We played a lot of freshmen and sophomores last year so our young players gained good experience. We have a lot of positives with this group. Pitchers 1, 2 and 3 are back. Statistically, last year we had our second-best fielding percentage as a team since I’ve been here.

“Our permanent indoor hitting facility will improve our hitting. We need to play smart and find ways to squeeze more runs. Our young players took their lumps last year but it will pay big dividends this year. Our schedule is always tough. This year is no exception – the defending state champion is in our sectional.”
