For all practical purposes, the Class A sectional at Lutheran was decided Saturday in the all-Southside semifinal match between the host Saints and Greenwood Christian Academy.The amazing Cougars (22-13) came from two sets down (25-21, 25-22) and stunned Lutheran 25-19, 25-17, 15-8.
Lutheran was going for its seventh consecutive sectional title and 19th overall.Then GCA easily swept Eminence 25-10, 25-10, 25-9 to end a seven-year sectional title drought.
The Cougars seek their first regional championship Saturday at noon in the Edinburgh Regional by facing Oldenburg Academy (26-7), a team GCA defeated 25-18, 25-16 in the Lancer Invitational.
The winner faces the 10 a.m. winner between Shakamak (12-10) and Indiana Deaf (26-9-1) later at 6 p.m.Throughout the season, the Cougars have been led by five players who have posted big numbers.
Junior Faith Kresge leads with 204 kills and 407 assists. Senior Naomi Hillenburg has 451 digs.
Senior Savannah Danielson is No. 2 with 292 assists.
Senior Milana Schundelmier leads in serves received with 318 and 67 aces and is second in kills with 170.
Junior Addisyn Yoder has 56 aces, 168 kills, and 27 blocks.
The Cougars have won nine consecutive matches and the Pioneer Conference and Edinburgh Invitational title trophies.
Lutheran closes with a 16-16 record and the Indiana Crossroads Conference championship and reached the semifinals of the Marion County tourney.
The Saints graduate seniors Grace King, Malin Bulock, Danielle Taylor, Hadleigh Filipovich, Rachel Bolton, and Brooklyn Ormsby.
