By Nathan Pace Online editor It was the first time Perry Meridian hosted Southport in the new Falcon Stadium, but it was the visitors who felt at home. During the Cardinals’ 24-0 victory, their student section began shouting, "This is our house!" Southport took the opening drive 90 yards for a touchdown as quarterback Eddie Schott scored on a keeper. On Southport's second drive, the Cardinals went through the Falcon defense again as it was Rashawn Haskins taking the ball to the end zone on a short pass. Meanwhile, Perry Meridian struggled on offense, going three-and-out on its first two possessions and gaining only 6 yards. Just before the first quarter ended, Perry Meridian finally got a first down but was trailing 17-0. Both offenses had issues once the rain increased in the second quarter. Perry Meridian reached Southport territory but turned the ball over on downs. A fumble stalled the Falcons (0-3) in the third quarter, and Southport's Nate Rockel intercepted Perry Meridian quarterback Brooks Davis. This set up a 17-yard touchdown run by junior Jalen Caldwell for the final score. The Cards (1-2) have knocked off the Falcons 10 straight times, dating back to Perry's 19-7 win in 2010. Perry Meridian will look for its first win Friday when hosting winless Terre Haute South. Southport travels to Terre Haute North. |
