Winters, a 2002 Southport graduate and seen with Principal Brian Knight, had served as an 11-year assistant under former coach Bill Peebles, who was named Lawrence Central’s coach in January. Winters was previously the defensive coordinator for Southport, which was 28-7 the past three seasons while winning sectional titles in 2013 and 2014. “I’m very excited,” Winters said. “I came in with coach Peebles 11 years ago and I’ve called Southport home basically my entire life. So I’m honored and excited.”
