Beech Grove’s football homecoming was foiled Friday by 2A No. 3 Scecina, while five Southside teams continued rolling along.

The 3A Hornets battled Scecina’s stunning air attack until the Crusaders took charge in the final eight minutes of an Indiana Crossroads Conference matchup, winning 41-21. Scecina remained unbeaten in four starts as Beech Grove (2-2, 2-2) faced its fourth consecutive league foe.

“The game was a lot closer than the score indicated,” Hornets coach Mark Weller said. “We had our chances, but we didn’t finish. We’ll get better after this.”

The Hornets could not contain Scecina quarterback Mac Ayres, who threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns as the Crusaders (4-0) built a 27-15 halftime lead.

Underdog Beech Grove took the second-half kickoff and pounded the ground with 250-pound senior running back Isaiah Hulse, who carried nine times for 56 yards and a touchdown to trim the score to 27-21. Early in the fourth quarter, BG junior defensive back Sergio Hulse intercepted an Ayres’ pass to halt a drive at the 24-yard line.

However, the Hornets could not move the ball beyond the 32 and were forced to punt, which led to a 69-yard scoring drive by the Crusaders for a 34-21 lead with five minutes left. An interception ended any hopes of a Hornet comeback and led to Scecina’s final TD.

The Hornets got a lift when Josiah Sullivan recovered a fumble after a Scecina pass completion on the Crusaders 19, which led to a 4-yard Isaiah Hulse TD, cutting the lead to 20-15 late in the second quarter. Hulse wound up with 128 yards on 21 carries.

“They threw the ball very well all night, and that was our Achilles’ heel,” Weller said. “We would get them pinned, and they would make a great move with the pass.”

Beech Grove junior quarterback Jordan Reel completed 10-of-19 passes for 84 yards, including a 32-yard scoring strike to Kylon Tyler in the first quarter. The Hornets limited Scecina to 75 yards rushing on 24 carries.
