By Al Stilley Senior staff writer Roncalli senior Paige Saylor closed her high school athletic career by winning the state championship in long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 1 inch Saturday at Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex in Bloomington. Saylor’s leap broke her record of 18 feet, 10 inches set last year in winning the regional. Her effort Saturday was 1 1/2 inches longer than runner-up Kaitlyn Davis of Washington. Saylor becomes Roncalli’s second girls state champion, following 2004 shot put champion Anna Weber. Roncalli’s Emily Sonderman was 16th with a leap of 17 feet, three-quarters of an inch. Saylor, a 5-5 basketball standout, remains undecided on three colleges, including Evansville. Top 10 finishes of area girls: Center Grove – Kylie Falcone, third, pole vault, 11-9; Kiyah Yeast, eighth, 100-meter dash, 12.22 seconds; 4x100 relay, 10th, 48.72; Haley Goines, 10th, long jump, 17-6 3/4. Franklin Central – 4x800 relay, Audrey Comastri, Kaylor Hoover, Jada Reedus, Shayla Traas, fourth, 9:19.01. Janea Bell, sixth (tie), high jump, 5-5. Perry Meridian – Iyaniah Hunter, 10th, 400, 57.62. Southport – Erin Sullivan, ninth, 800, 2:15.51. Boys state finals Center Grove sprinter Grant Mason stood on the top-eight podium twice Friday in the track and field championships at IU. Mason was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 10.72 seconds and fourth in the 200 in 21.73, two-fifths of a second behind winner Noah McBride of Evansville Harrison. Trevor Hohlt, fourth, 300 hurdles, 38.69; and Christian Goines, sixth, 110 hurdles, 14.42; were podium finishers for Center Grove. The Trojans tied for 15th with Fort Wayne Northrop. |
