SUBMITTED PHOTOS The Beech Grove Alumni Association recently hosted its annual golf outing at Sarah Shank, where the winning team featured (from left) Dick Britton, Jon Smith, Faith Smith and Dewey Erwin. Richard “Dick” Wise (below, left), 89, seen with event chairman Bob Thomas, was responsible for launching the association’s first outing in 1988, even though the hole sign indicates 1987. “There were three foursomes in that first outing at Sarah Shank,” said Wise. “Joe Namath – not the football player – won $12 for the longest drive, and John Smith won $12 for being closest to the hole. Afterward, we all went to Dog n Suds for some refreshments.” Although Wise is an avid golfer – he plays once or twice a week and still has some good days – this was the first time he’s participated in the association’s tournament since the early 1990s. Thomas has been coordinating the event for five years, and this year’s outing raised $3,500 – the most during his tenure – and attracted 61 players, a record. Wise, Class of 1944, was praised for initiating the event, and Thomas, Class of 1969, received equal recognition for what his peers call a fantastic job in organizing the event from year to year.
