SUBMITTED PHOTO Wearing his 3rd Armored Division hat, former Pfc. Joe Banich Sr. (center) is seen with his son, retired Army Col. Joe Banich Jr. (right) and his grandson, Roncalli teacher Kevin Banich, after addressing Kevin’s social studies class. Joe Banich, a 93-year-old World War II Purple Heart recipient, had the class’s undivided attention when talking about his service, which spanned from February 1943 to October 1945 in the European Theatre. In addition to being awarded five Bronze Stars, he seized a Nazi flag during the capture of Cologne and liberated a concentration camp. His son was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a Hoosier.
