| About 75 cars were on display for our monthly cruise-in at The Southsider Voice office parking lot, even with an impending summer downpour. Many were on hand to help honor Bob “Bikini” Keeney for his 60-plus years of contributions to the hot-rodding hobby. If you read last week’s story about him, you know that he started custom pinstriping when he was 11 and started on cars at 13! We also helped him celebrate his 75th birthday. The Voice gave Bikini a Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to him by childhood friend Eddie Hankins, whom Bikini had not seen in 60 years! When the rain rolled in, everyone stayed for at least another hour and gathered under the many canopies that had been set up. Mother Nature didn’t cooperate, but she could not hinder the fun of true car nuts. Thanks go out to Dant Insurance, Beck Service Center, Chick-fil-A, Dan Shine Realty and Gerald Seacat for helping sponsor this family-fun event. Our next cruise-in is Friday, Sept. 5, and don’t forget about Saturday’s Remember Blake Car Show at Franklin Middle School. Sponsors are expecting about 400 cars, and hundreds of handcrafted trophies will be awarded. I will be there in the morning taking photos and gathering stories for future “Car Nutz” columns. Until next week, keep on cruising! |
