Artists to display work at Garfield Park Arts Center

Artists from Southport Artistry will display their works from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, when a monthlong exhibit opens at the Garfield Park Arts Center, 2450 Shelby St.

SoArts Executive Director Duane King and many SoArts members will be displaying their work. Duane has been a prominent Southside artist for many years. You have probably seen him at events sketching drawings for people and engaging them with his warm smile and conversation. His sculptures are treasured pieces for anyone’s home and depict wonderful scenes of everyday life. He heads SoArts, which offers free memberships and meets the first Thursday of every month at the center and also at the Southside Art League.

Jim Anderson, another member and owner of Art from the Spirit, is curating the exhibition in conjunction with the art center’s Elsy Benitez. Jim and his wife, Linda, are members of the Indianapolis Photographic Society, which meets every Wednesday evening at the center. His photographic works, whether framed or on canvas, feature subjects from real and abstract settings in nature to people in their daily lives. “God is the master artist, and I am fortunate to have God share his creations with me,” said Mr. Anderson. Many of his abstract works from Buffalo Creek will be on display in June and July at the Fishers Town Hall.

Most of the artists teach for Perry Township Schools. Others are professionals in business and health care, but all are qualified artists with a message to express through their works. Mediums for the works in the exhibit will include oil and acrylic on canvas, acrylic, ink and epoxy works, digital print on fabric and on canvas, sculptures in wood and resin and multimedia sculpture. Many of the pieces can be purchased.

The opening reception, which is free, will be complemented with tasty treats and Celtic music. The exhibit may be viewed from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
