Music streaming comes to library

6/24/2015

Indianapolis Public Library patrons can stream music from a free online catalog of more than 9 million songs and 28,000 music labels through www.indypl.org.

Provided by Freegal, the initiative offers an alternative to such services as Pandora and Spotify and allows patrons to stream up to three hours of ad-free music per day. Individual songs or entire albums from various genres can be streamed, and users can create and customize as many play lists as they like.

“This service follows the library’s new strategic direction in making more resources available for patrons,” stated Michael Perry, electronic resources librarian. “Adapting our products to meet the demands of today’s tech-savvy users, especially young people, keeps the library relevant and current as an information resource provider.”

The service already allows up to five downloads of music per week, which patrons can keep. In addition, music videos can be downloaded.

The library introduced the free streaming of feature films, foreign films, award-winning documentaries, children’s movies and popular TV series in 2014.

The Indianapolis Zoo will be the place to shake a tail feather when two popular concert series return this summer.

Zoolapalooza, running from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Fridays, June 19, through July 20, will feature some of the area’s top bands playing hits from today and yesteryear. My Yellow Rickshaw opens the program, with The Bishops, Jayne Bond and the Pink Martinis and An Innocent Band playing subsequent weeks.

As the summer heats up, visitors can keep it cool with Animals and All That Jazz. One of the zoo’s longest-running events, the program will showcase a range of distinctive artists, acts and musical stylings. Now in its 28th season, the program kicks off at 5:30 p.m. July 9 with Brenda Williams and continues every Thursday through Aug. 6.

The series will feature the West Central Quartet on July 16, Mina and the Wondrous Flying Machine, July 23; Appalatin, July 30; and Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, Aug. 6:

Rides and animals will be available until 7 p.m. each evening. All concerts are free for zoo members and included with regular admission. Guests are encouraged to save money on their visit by purchasing advance tickets online at IndianapolisZoo.com.
