The Marian University women’s basketball team dominated the second half to defeat Taylor 73-62 Saturday for its third straight win to improve to 8-2 (3-0 Crossroads League).
Jenna Sullivan picked up her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Kellie Kirkhoff (Roncalli) was the leading scorer with 15 points; Laken Hasser-Smith chipped in 11.
On Dec. 2 the Knights downed No. 25 Huntington 64-55 in NAIA Division II play. Coach Katie Gerald’s team had four players in double figures, with freshman Dejah Cyrus registering her second double-double. Laken Hasser-Smith had 12 points, and Anastacia Kirby and Joana Soeiro added 10 points each.
Next up for the No. 6 Knights are road games Dec. 12 and 19 against Lindsey Wilson College and PM Webber International, respectively.
The men’s team, ranked No. 10, is 11-0 (3-0) after defeating Huntington Dec. 2 and Taylor on Saturday.
Marian defeated Huntington behind the 15 points and 14 rebounds of Dion Smith (Franklin Central). Wesley Stowers scored a team-high 20 points while Caleb Begle added 11 points. Nick Painter had four points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots.
Against Taylor, Smith scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman Wesley Stowers scored a team-high 26 points, with Dwight Cliff and Painter each chipping 11; Painted also snared five rebounds and blocked five shots.
Marian will travel to Indiana University Kokomo Dec. 13 before returning home to face Lourdes Dec. 19.
The University of Indianapolis women’s team fell to 1-9 after losing to No. 2 Lewis 67-51 Dec. 5. The Greyhounds host Tiffin Dec. 17.
The men’s squad improved to 6-2 (2-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) after defeating Lewis 84-70 Dec. 5.
Jimmy King, a freshman and a Roncalli product, is averaging 7.0 points per game.
UIndy will host Olivet Nazarene at 1 p.m. Saturday.
