The Hornets downed host Speedway 68-42 in a rivalry that began in 1940.
The combined points ties a Beech Grove record set in 2008 in a 60-50 home loss against West Vigo. BG’s 68 points breaks the 60-point record scored against the Sparkplugs in 1989, according to Southside historian Jim Pich, and was only six points short of the team’s 74-point single-game record.
Beech Grove racked up 556 yards of offense with Chase Andries completing 19-of-30 passes for 225 yards and five touchdowns. Isaiah Hulse ran for three scores and 139 yards on 14 carries.
Roncalli won its first Circle City Conference game with a goal-line stand that stopped Chatard four times inside the 3 for a 21-14 triumph. Trailing 14-7 at halftime, the Rebels scored on Derek O’Connor’s TD passes to Luke Smock and the team’s “Jackie” play with Connor Gore throwing a 4-yard scoring strike to O’Connor in the second half.
Roncalli had played 555 games as an independent until joining the new league this season.
Greenwood opened its Mid-State campaign by dropping visiting Martinsville, Center Grove retained the Copper Kettle against Carmel and Manual (2-1) continued its best start in several years.
