Carlson’s comments: “Our biggest loss (graduation) in experience was up front, but at one time they were inexperienced too. I like our senior leadership. Our juniors and seniors are solid, but we have a lot of young players who can help us a lot. Freshman Caitie Baird is already ranked as a top-five recruit in the nation. Our sectional is much improved and tougher with addition of Roncalli. The biggest key to our season will be the health of our players, staying away from injuries because of the demands of the game.”
PERRY MERIDIAN (25-9) – All defeats last year were to top-10 teams … graduation losses were 6-2 Sarah Clem, Georgetown (Ky.) No doubt Rebels will miss seven seniors from sectional and regional championship squad …Roncalli had winning streaks of 19 and 12 wins in a row … only losses were to Center Grove, Providence and twice to state champ Cathedral … coach Missy (Abbott) Marsh will push to regain that continuity and team chemistry … Rebels will be strong and experienced up front … all-senior front line consists of 5-9 Kalyn Schreiber (296 kills), 5-10 McKenna Lundy (220 kills) and 6-0 Annie Strevels (75 blocks) … assets are Schreiber’s court awareness, Lundy’s versatility and Strevels quickness and power … depth comes from seniors Emily Stevens and Anna Marie Lawrie on back line and Megan Condi and Amy Jennings up front … senior Kathryn Lemmel, No. 2 in assists, is injured … setters are sophs Amelia Banister and Lauren Fey … freshman Betsy Crosley backs up middle hitter spot.
Marsh’s comments: “We will miss the graduated seniors because of all their experience. Our three returning seniors on the front line are really strong and experienced. We won’t have the same game knowledge because we have players who have not played at varsity speed. It’s a matter of working on the basics, timing and play calling. Going back to the basics is not a bad thing.” |
