Pack Away Hunger, 5230 Park Emerson Drive, hosted its third annual Pack Friday event Nov. 26 and 27, giving families an alternative to Black Friday shopping by packing meals for others.
“Thanksgiving is a day when food is on all of our minds but not on all of our plates,” said Pack Away Hunger Executive Director Larry Moore. “This event is a way for us to impact a very real hunger problem right here in central Indiana and in developing nations around the world.”
The 220 volunteers worked four shifts and packed 30,024 Nutri-Plenty meals, a nutritious blend of rice, vegetables and soy. The meals have a long shelf life, making them an ideal product for food banks and for international distribution, said Moore, who added that the meals will be split between local food pantries and a partner agency in Guatemala.
“We’re grateful that people take time out of their holiday to serve others,” he said. “These meals will make a significant impact for people right here in central Indiana and for children suffering from chronic malnutrition in Guatemala.”
